Good Food Festival and Market

The annual end-of-April tradition in the Yao household is attending the Good Food Festival and Market (http://www.goodfoodfestival.net/). It's a giant (though getting smaller) smorgasborg of food samples, cooking demos, relatively low prices, and free giveaways. Not much gets me out of bed early on a Saturday morning, but making sure I get to this show on time does. We arrived about 10 minutes after 10, and the line was out the front door, around the corner, down the length of the building, and around the corner down about half of the other side of the building.

Thought of That Day:
You know what I see a lot of at this event? Fat people, and rude people. Far be it for me to generalize, but the level of rudeness seem to be proportional to the size of one's thighs. When the nice survey lady came by to ask how we could improve the show, I made some remark about how they could make the aisles wider, but I was really thinking, "Make it my right, nay my obligation, to to bitch slap anyone who cuts in line in front of me". Fuck, folks. A sample-sized soy burger just isn't worth being rude about, no matter how juicy it is.

Highlight of the Show:
Getting the autographs of the Looneyspoons/Crazy Plates (http://www.looneyspoons.com/ or http://www.crazyplates.com/) ladies - Greta and Janet Podleski. Needless to say, I was star struck. Let me first say that neither the pictures of them on the cover of their wonderful cookbooks, nor on the boxes of their extremely wonderful frozen dinners/pizzas does any justice to how hot they look in person. Absolutely delicious. Obviously the ladies were busy, so I only got to talk to Greta, but she's seems so nice and down to earth, and so patient with everyone who asked her a question, or just wanted to chat.

Best New and Innovative Product:
Chris and Tal's Better Burger (http://www.betterfoods.ca/products-burger.html). The idea seems simple enough, to mix beef and soy to get the taste and texture of beef, but with the lower fat of soy. I have to admit that there really wasn't anything close to this product in terms of innovation. Okay, okay, anything that Greta and Janet make, but unfortunately, what they had at the show wasn't new. It would be really cool to see them release a new cook book at next year's show!
